Welcome to Spring!

The students have been participating in numerous  activities, field trips, and events  including; Red’s in the Hood, Bill Mason, Parliament Hill and Supreme Court of Canada, Poetry Café, Gaelic Football, Next Generation Dance, Scientists in the School, Bake Sale, Intramural recess sports, the Talent Show, and Junior Boys ‘and Girls’ Basketball Tournament. The girls running club, for girls in grades 3 to 6 is up and running after school.

On behalf of the school, a very special thank you is extended to our committed School Council for their fundraising activities, which includes the organizing of the lunch programs and Movie Nights. A heartfelt thank you is extended to everyone who participated and volunteered in the School Council Fundraising activities this year.  School Council raised twenty- three thousand dollars this year and through the monthly Council meetings have discussed and allocated the money for 25 Chromebooks, whiteboards for some classrooms, outdoor recess equipment, Library books, Reading Resources and Games to be painted on the school yard.

Staffing 2017-2018:  The OCDSB has forwarded to the schools, projected staffing levels for next year.   It appears that WEJ at this point in time is fairly status quo to this year in terms of student enrollment.

Class Organization:  Planning for individual classroom’s compliment of children for the 2018-2019 school is underway.  The task is challenging as all staff strive to place every child in an optimum learning environment.  As this school year has progressed, the teachers have worked closely with each student ascertaining their learning abilities.  As a cautionary note, teachers have been instructed not to accept requests for a specific placement.  However, if there are extenuating circumstances that you as a parent feel are relevant, please inform the Principal in writing prior to May 23, 2018.

WEJ’s CHEO Walk-A-Thon is scheduled for the morning of Friday May 18th.  Kindergarten students will remain on school property, while the rest will walk through the Beaverbrook community.  We would love for you to come and walk with us. Please ensure your child(ren) are dressed for the weather; hat, sunscreen or rainwear.  Thank you for your support for this worthwhile cause.

Provincial mandated EQAO testing has rolled around again for students in grades 3 and 6.  Grade 3 students’ testing will take place from May 22nd to May 25th.  Grade 6 students’ testing begins May 28th until June 1st.  June 4th is a make-up day.  Please make every effort possible to ensure your child’s attendance on their respective testing days.

It is with mixed feelings that I announce I am retiring at the end of this school year. I am very sad to say good-bye to the exceptional people I have had the privilege of meeting and working with throughout my teaching and administrative career.

I have truly enjoyed my time here at WEJ as Principal. It has been rewarding and fulfilling working with such wonderful children, dedicated staff and caring parents. The incoming Principal is Ms. Colleen Irvin. She is moving from Huntley Centennial Public school, where she has been the Principal for the past 6 years. She is a very experienced elementary leader. I know that you will make her feel welcome at this outstanding school.

Thank you for your on-going support and cooperation. I will miss W. Erskine Johnston PS. This is a great community and I will always treasure the many wonderful memories of the students, staff, parents and family members.

I wish every family all the best and I know that your child will continue to enjoy the many exciting educational opportunities provided by this school.
