Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

WEJ students are active participants in their school community and the community at large. We participate in food drives to benefit the Kanata Food Cupboard are done throughout the year. Our annual Holiday Basket Project at Christmas time is an overwhelming success each year. Running for the Terry Fox Foundation in September to raise awareness for cancer research has become a tradition with WEJ students and we enthusiastically embrace district wide projects to help kids in neighbourhood schools. We also support the United Way – Education Foundation - with some type of fundraiser each year.

Staff

Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications including Bachelors and Masters degrees in Arts, Fine Arts, Physical Education and Sciences, as well as additional qualifications in Special Education, English as a Second Language, Music, Visual Arts, Guidance, and Computers in Education. They have actively participated in numerous district-wide professional development activities in literacy and numeracy, and we recognize their initiative by providing and supporting opportunities for further professional growth. We also recognize staff leadership via personal interactions with one another, letters of thanks, school announcements, school newsletters, assemblies, performance appraisals, and our Principal’s report to school council.

Staff members at WEJ enthusiastically celebrate excellence. They participate in district wide opportunities to enhance professional practice and are willing to share knowledge and ideas with colleagues at a school-based level. Networking and the sharing of strategies to enhance student learning is a focus for staff and team meetings at all levels. Many teachers share a love for the outdoors and have diverse hobbies, including golf, travel, photography, fitness & technology. WEJ staff members willingly contribute to extra-curricular activities for our students and they lead by example at every opportunity. We offer a wide range of expertise and qualifications including Music, Design and Technology, Computers, Special Education and Physical Education.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Our parent and community volunteers contribute regularly to daily activities that support and benefit our students. Our dedicated school council meets monthly and contributed a great deal of time to initiatives designed to continue making WEJ a wonderful place to learn. As invaluable partners, we thank our parents, guardians and volunteers on an ongoing basis, and look for opportunities to acknowledge them such as school announcements, our principal’s report to school council, school newsletters, and our annual volunteer appreciation event.

In recent years, School Council volunteers have helped to raise funds to enhance resources for our students. They have provided funds for bringing the arts into our school. Local authors, musicians, storytellers and writers have been invited to share their talents with our student body. Books for our library have been purchased through funds raised through read-a-thons and Christmas time gift sales. Bicycle racks and playground balls have been purchased to improve the health and well-being of our students. Parent volunteers have planted and tended to a beautiful garden that enhances our front entrance way and they are committed to redesigning our accessible interior courtyard. Parent volunteers, co-op students, volunteers and family members enrich our classrooms each day and we value their contributions with an annual celebration in June.

Community

WEJ is fortunate for and extremely appreciative of our community partnerships. Our open door and welcoming environment has enabled our school to be a contributing member of this community. We are proud of our school and we are proud of our friends and families that contribute to this wonderful and rich learning environment.
